Easy Vegan Mozzarella Sticks

I was never a huge mozzarella stick person but I love easy comfort food and thought I’d try to veganize this American classic. I was actually blown away by how flavorful these were!

A few recipe tips:

The key to this recipe is having really flavorful bread crumbs. If you don’t see a lot of seasonings listed in the ingredients of your bread crumbs, add dried basil, oregano, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, or any other Italian seasoning blend you’d like.

You want to make sure to freeze the sticks for the full hour. If you don’t, you may risk them oozing out while frying and becoming a big mess.

You also don’t need to deep fry these mozzarella sticks - it works perfectly with a thin layer of oil on a frying pan and then just turning them to fry each side. This saves you from using a ton of oil for one recipe.

What is vegan mozzarella?

Vegan mozzarella is often made from a blend of nuts, oils, and seasonings. They significantly vary in flavor from brand to brand, so I recommend trying different ones until you find one you like.

Where can I find vegan mozzarella?

You can always search for your favorite products on their website’s store locator or call your local stores before having to drive from store to store.

Easy Vegan Mozzarella Sticks

Prep time: 5 MinCook time: 5 MinInactive time: 1 HourTotal time: 1 H & 10 M

Ingredients

  • vegan mozzarella wheel or block, or 6 daiya mozzarella sticks
  • oil for frying
1st bowl
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • large pinch salt
  • large pinch pepper
2nd bowl
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened plant milk
  • 1 tbsp ground flax
3rd bowl
  • 1 cup Italian seasoned panko bread crumbs (vegan)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the ingredients for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd bowls separately. Set aside for a few minutes.
  2. If not using precut mozzarella sticks, cut mozzarella into 6 long thick strips.
  3. Before coating, stir the milk mixture so the flax doesn't sink to the bottom.
  4. Dip each mozzarella stick in the flour mixture (1st bowl), then the milk (2nd bowl). Then dip it again in the flour mixture, again in the milk, and then coat with bread crumbs.
  5. Place prepped mozzarella sticks on a plate with parchment paper and freeze for 1 hour.
  6. Heat 1/2 inch oil in a frying pan. When hot, remove mozzarella sticks from freezer and fry on all sides, for approximately 1 minute on each side or until golden brown.
  7. Serve immediately while hot and dip in marinara sauce. Enjoy!
